Travel Alerts - REAL ID Now Required for Domestic Air Travel: What You Need to Know

As of May 7, 2025, the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) mandates that all travelers aged 18 and older present a REAL ID-compliant form of identification to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities. This initiative, rooted in the 2005 REAL ID Act, aims to enhance national security by establishing uniform standards for state-issued IDs.

Key Points:

  • Identification Requirements: A REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID is marked with a star in the upper right corner. Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (EDLs) from states like Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington are also acceptable. Alternatively, travelers may use a valid U.S. passport, military ID, or other TSA-approved identification forms .

  • International Travel: A REAL ID is not sufficient for international travel. A valid U.S. passport is still required for all international flights .

  • Application Process: To obtain a REAL ID, applicants must visit their state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in person, providing documents that verify identity, residency, and legal presence in the U.S. Some states may allow applicants to begin the process online .

  • TSA Screening Updates: The TSA is deploying new Credential Authentication Technology (CAT-2) units at airports nationwide. These devices enhance identity verification by matching a live photo of the traveler with the photo on their ID, streamlining the security process .

  • Enforcement and Compliance: While the TSA is enforcing the REAL ID requirement, reports indicate that initial enforcement has been somewhat lenient, with non-compliant travelers receiving informational materials rather than being denied boarding. However, strict enforcement is expected to increase over time
